You could say I was born with a taste for transformation. It’s what my name means in Farsi—the art of alchemy, what ancient Persians believed was the practice of transforming metal into gold. In Arabic and several other languages, it means chemistry, a kind of magic in its own right, and one better known in today’s world. My writing is concerned with the practices of magic and transformation, too. In my work, I strive primarily to explore issues of identity, female relationship dynamics, and the powerful evolution inherent in a woman coming into her own. My fiction and poetry alike blend the genres of speculative fiction, fantasy, and magical realism. I am especially drawn to reimagining fairy tales, folklore, and classical mythology in contemporary and feminist capacities.
